There are three core veterinary checks you should use if you are nursing a sick horse, suspect your horse is under the weather or you want a baseline from which to assess his general health and fitness.

These are checking his breathing rate, his heart rate and his temperature.

First check his respiratory rate.

Put your fingers close to his nostril and focus on his breathing.

Decide to count breaths in or breaths out.
