Checking your horse's vital health signs

  • There are three core veterinary checks you should use if you are nursing a sick horse, suspect your horse is under the weather or you want a baseline from which to assess his general health and fitness.
  • These are checking his breathing rate, his heart rate and his temperature.
  • First check his respiratory rate.
  • Put your fingers close to his nostril and focus on his breathing.
