About this video

Dressage, show jumping and eventing all cause soreness hot-spots for competition horses. Equine masseur Beth Butler demonstrates where these are and what massage techniques are useful for relieving them. Beth tells Fiona Price that dressage is a cross between ballet and weight lifting for horses, so they are prone to getting tight in the poll when flexing and in the loins when collecting. Show jumpers use their hamstrings in the quarters and pectorals in the chest for lift-off, and eventers work their quads' when galloping. Beth explains how massage helps to remove toxins and stresses that less is often more regards pressure!

Tinap 19 Jun 2010 Really well presented. My thoroughbred is really ticklish and fidgets whilst being groomed, I am going to try these techniques to see if it is in fact muscle tension causing his ticklishness. Very interesting.
Giovanni 3 Jun 2010 Have tried these and my horse loved the poll one, chewing and went really well the nexst day, also the pecs one was brilliant as he so sensitive and this is definetly helping to release that area. Although he is not overkeen he is getting used to it, but you can feel all the knots in his muscles definelty seems to have the pleasure and pain sensation for him. This was brilliant, definetly better than a book!
Pupu 1 Jun 2010 Thank you so much for this video! My horse puts his head down and tilts it is pleasure when I run the massage brush over his poll sometimes! I have been a bit nervous to do too much as I have not been sure if it is good for him, but now I will treat him to proper massages often! He sometimes does it on his bum muscles as well - upperlip wiggling away when I groom! Fantastic video - keep them coming!
TinkerBell 29 May 2010 Thank you Fiona! I have tried the poll area massage for my horse, and was really surprised how light the pressure was needed. I really thought I was not doing much - but my mare really enjoyed it! We both thank you Beth!
Fiona Price 23 May 2010 Interestingly, Tinkerbell, you will see in Part 2 of the Golden Horseshoe experience (coming soon), that we massage the acupressure point under the browband to help relax Princess Sahhara, to get her heart rate down before the final vetting. There are two more videos to come with Beth, then we are planning a series on healing for horses later in the year which will include understanding where their energy centres (chakras) are and how to use them!
