Thanks!
I had a good look yesterday and her rug wasnt too greasy but once we've got a couple slightly warmer days (its been freezing lately) I will take it off n give it a good scrub! I feel its likely to be friction thats caused it but will keep an eye on it as I dont want much more to fall out especially as she is going to be sold as soon as the weather picks up and I can ride again!

Hi DizzyAilsa
Loss of mane is a fairly common problem when you use a full neck rug. There are two possible reasons for this. One is that there can be one or more seams that rub the horse’s mane and the other is that the neck piece may well be decidedly dirty, particularly if she is wearing the same rug 24/7. Think what happens to your hair when you wear a hat – then imagine wearing it without a break for a few months!
I suggest that you remove the neck piece at least during the day. Try to get it cleaned and then work on building up her mane – feed a good vitamin and mineral supplement, use gentle massage of the roots to encourage growth, and avoid energetic brushing of the mane so that you don’t pull out more hair.
Good luck

My horse has exactly the same problem.
I've not changed bedding/diet/haylage in last 2 months & all of a sudden her mane matted in a section & has fallen out.
She's fully clipped, not being worked due to weather & is in good conidition both weight wise and in her coat. She's wormed reg.
She wears 2 rugs fulltime, a lightweight stable rug underneath a heavyweight turnout which has a neck attached.
I wonder if her mane is falling out coz she's gettin too warm?? She wears same rugs all the time coz she's on rubber matting so the turnout is better than a stable rug.
Any thoughts would be great!

Hi Alfiemoon
A load of questions for you which might help identify the problem if there are no lice, mites or mange:
When did he start losing his mane? Is it on just part of his neck or is it all up the neck? What is the rest of his coat like (fine, coarse, patchy, dry, moulting) ?
How old is your horse, what breed, what sort of condition is he in (fit, fat, losing weight, gaining weight etc)
Have you changed bedding, feed, hay supplier, washing powder, saddle soap, stabling arrangements?
Is he wearing the same rugs as he was before the problem started? Have you had them washed/waterproofed?
What did the vet think was the problem or has he just said there is nothing there and left you with the problem?
I look forward to hearing your responses and then will have more idea how to help.
