Sam Watson and Horseware Bushman at Badminton 2009

Profile

  • Age: 24
  • Favourite Horse: Horseware Bushman (George). We bred him so he’s a family member really. At the age of seven he carried me to the Young Rider Europeans where we missed an individual medal by just 0.4 of a penalty. We also did our first three star, first Badminton and first Senior Europeans together. I know I shouldn’t have favourites but he’s a worthy one! If I could have any horse in the World it would be Ashdale Cruisemaster - he's a league above any horse I've ever seen.
  • Greatest Moment: Badminton finish line 2009, clear first time!
  • Words of Wisdom: "Just kick like hell and get him through the flags" - Aunty Daisy Dick's pre Badminton pep-talk!
  • Star Sign: Capricorn
  • Essential Piece of Kit: My breeches... (not wearing any would just be inappropriate!!)
  • Aim for 2010: More horses, more owners and sponsors and more success! It sounds so greedy but you don’t get anywhere in this sport without a bit of drive and ambition. I’d also like to do a bit more teaching if I have time, and if anyone is brave enough to come for a lesson!
  • Hero or Heroine: Vincent O’Brien tops the list by a mile. I was fortunate enough to sit beside him at lunch when I was a youngster, but at the time I didn’t realise that I was in the presence of probably the greatest man I’ll ever know. However, aspiring to be like Vincent O’Brien would be demoralising! Therefore I’m naming a number two, Michael O’Leary of Ryanair. What a contrast, but O’Leary is undoubtedly a genius in his own domain. I couldn't think of a better person to lead the country out of this recession.

Biography

28th of December 1985 was the day that little Sammy Watson landed on planet Earth - location Ireland! I was a tubby young chap, almost all of eleven pounds (spare a thought for Mummy Watson!) so life on the back of a horse seemed unlikely (unless we could find a pony with a reinforced steel spine).

However, as I waddled through my early years, the endearing puppy flab was replaced by nothingness and I became a not-so-fat young Irishman. I soon found myself plonked on a horse and that, folks, is how it all began. Many hand-me-down ponies were kicked and flapped over logs, into ditches, through hedges and submersed in water. My liking of the four-legged creatures was moderate.....I wasn't exactly hooked from the word go.

My sisters Suzannah and Rozzie were both talented in the saddle - if we could have tackled eventing as a family then Zanna would perform an immaculate dressage test and put us firmly in the lead. Rozzie, on board our first homebred star 'Floating', would stylishly leave the coloured poles in place, and then I, by default, would give the cross country a go (probably undoing all their good work!). But alas, the family format hasn't taken off so I bear the responsibility of flying the Watson flag alone.

To date it's been enjoyable and emotional. In 2008, I combined my finals at Trinity College (studying Management Science and Information Systems) with a bid to represent Ireland at the Olympics. Unfortunately I wasn't picked for the latter, and although a first from university sounds glamorous, the Olympic urge still flickers away. Having been based with Laura Collett in 2009 I now have my own yard in Worcestershire ready for another campaign on the British eventing circuit. 2010 has started well and Horseware Bushman (George) and I finished 13th at Badminton, which although outside my aim of top 10 was still very pleasing. I hope it stands us in good stead for selection for WEG 2010.

Come what may there'll be no compromise for 2012... or between now and then. I've arrived at 4* level, experienced Badminton and the European Championships, and been well and truly bitten by the bug... watch this space!
