About this video

A difficult loader is one of the most traumatic and stressful experiences for horse and handler, and it's surprisingly common! Sarah demonstrates the problem with Eric, who has been difficult for years. Horse behaviourist, Richard Maxwell sets about understanding Eric's evasions and finding ways to counter them. "The horse's smartness is his ability to look stupid, so it's important we respect his intelligence. It's like playing chess", says Richard. Using a training halter, he starts a dialogue with Eric that involves being able to move his feet and increase the speed of his responses. Richard applies this, with dramatic results, to loading!

Olga 9 Jan 2010 Wow, I'm very impressed! Thank you very much for this video! Richard, you explain things very well! Thank you!
Bibbett 9 Jan 2010 Brilliant as usual, I notice you didn't use the end of the rope to mobilise Eric back to centre each time , most NH people have have seen would do, your way looks calmer to me! Thanks! For a doorway issue if spooked prior to entry which is similar would you do the same? Other horses next to stable exhibit negatively during process!
shfanne 9 Jan 2010 Great film, I was enthralled. I will try this if my horse ever recovers from his loading accident! Couple of questions - 1. I assume there is great significance in this halter - is it unique or can I use a standard rope halter with an extra long lead rope? 2. My horse always loaded himself in a rear ramp lorry like the one in the film, he only put the brakes on in a smaller side load one - there must be a reason as he is not the sort to object for the hell of it, any ideas anyone? Anyone else had problems loading with the new 3.5 ton side loaders (it is a 2 horse size coachbuilt back not a van conversion and he has it all to himself)? My other horse doesn't bat an eyelid about going in! Keep up the good work.
Eloise 9 Jan 2010 Brilliant - clear advice
