About this video

Horse behaviourist Richard Maxwell has a very unusual background. He started life in the Household Cavalry where he learned about the importance of self-discipline. However, he disliked the rigid system for training horses. It was only when Richard met natural horseman Monty Roberts, did he realise that "quitting" was not cowardly. He says, "there comes a point where backing off is the decent thing to do for you and the horse". Richard talks to Fiona Price about how he blends conventional and behaviourist approaches, and how his work has changed him. A great insight into a remarkable man, whose methods can be watched on Horse Hero.

Mollychop 16 Feb 2010 Thanks for this interview HH .My horse is also scared of lorries, not to the same degree as the one mentioned in the vid, but takes time to pass one and when half-way past will pick up the pace to a panicked canter. Now I am not sure how to improve things because I am starting to feel stressed too when there is a big lorry. Also, we live in a quiet country location so we can't familiarise ourselves to them. Any suggestions about what we can do? (ps:otherwise she is pretty sensible and not overly spooky. She did come with napping problems which have improved with time and gaining her trust from the ground and in the saddle)
Adastra 15 Feb 2010 What a delightful interview. I've heard Monty Roberts say HM The Queen invited him to demonstrate his methods - is this how Richard met Monty? Has Monty's visit had any influence on the training of horses and handlers in the Cavalry? Alan Titchmarsh did a TV programme on the Queen's Horses which included him riding a cavalry horse. I'd love a Horse Hero video on the subject and especially to have a female perspective on what it's like to wear all that kit - any chance, Fiona, do you think?
hhhorse 15 Feb 2010 My Hero! You have made such a huge difference to my relationship with my horse and therefore my riding. By encouraging the teacher/pupil relationship my schooling is improving all the time. Sincere thanks Richard!
lifeisgreat9597 14 Feb 2010 Richard you are the best. Since seeing your video on horse hero I bought your dvd 'maximise your horse's potential' and the companion book. I was so impressed. I have since bought all other books you wrote (found them on ebay). My horses are improving each day with your training keep up the great work. Do you have any new dvd's or books coming out?
christina 12 Feb 2010 Really interesting to hear more about your background Richard. Thanks for sharing your training on Horse Hero. I've been putting the long halts & thinking time into action with fabulous results with my hyper baby horse coming back into work.
