About this video

Ravi is tricky to lead. Richard's aim is to prevent a 'nuisance' behaviour from escalating into something more dangerous. By showing Ravi a gentle system of pressure and release and allowing him time to think about it, Richard teaches Ravi in a matter of minutes how to walk his own line. at the speed of the handler and do that tricky right turn! Richard says it's about getting the horse to accept, not just tolerate a consistent and intuitive system. Starting with obvious gestures, Richard progresses to suggestions in his body language to communicate with Ravi. This video is a revelation into horse behaviour!

Carmel4ie 30 Dec 2009 Thank you for a great video! Lots to think about when leading my horses!
Gillyfilly 23 Dec 2009 This is really helpful. My five year old gelding has some of these nuisance tendencies when leading in from the field. He is three fields from the yard and needs to be led through 3 gates and two fields before getting back to the yard. The most recent 'trick' is to canter off at high speed when he is the second field, have a little spin around and then let us catch him before proceeding back to the yard. He is at livery and the yard staff are now using a bridle for turn out and bring in. I appreciated they need to be safe but I wonder whether the halter you used for this video and some pressure and release type work would be beneficial to his general education? He is a lovely generous horse in all other respects so I think he is just trying us out as most 5 year olds will do.
Richard Maxwell 17 Dec 2009 Thanks for the great comments, by getting the small things right like leading, standing and respect of personal space you'll find that little niggles in the ridden work will also start to improve.
k2d1 14 Dec 2009 Fantastic video, thank you Richard.
Timberwolf 14 Dec 2009 Thanks for that Richard. I have a couple of your books and try to do things in a 'Horse logical' way. 9 times out of 10 it works for me but it does make all the difference seeing things demontstrated as well. My 6yo Hannovarian cross mare is nearly 17 hands and tends to have the brain of a 2yo arab most of the time. Unfortunately, she also has moments of belligerance to go with the excitability and tries to use her size against me if allowed. More of these videos will definitely help us to sort out a working relationship. Plesae keep them coming. Karen
