About this video

Whether or not reining is your sport, this is a must! GB team rider Doug Allen (with team mate Francesca Sternberg) provides a fascinating insight into reining. Doug talks about why they start horses so young, the reasons for the jog and lope gaits and how they work two and three year olds to develop the balance and suppleness required for reining 'patterns'. Stable jockey Ernie shows very early work in the two year old while Doug demonstrates the progression in training with the three year old, who has started spins and sliding stops. Doug says patience is vital, plus making it easy for the horse to do the right thing, and the 'W' word!

keyses 18 Oct 2009 Very interesting and skillful. I hope we have more videos on this. I do dressage but I think all aspects of horsemanship inter-act and are helpful. I liked the relaxation shown by all the horses - excellent.
Silver Snaffles 5 Oct 2009 Very interesting especially how they teach cantering on the correct lead - letting the horse find out for itself. Great video as always. Many thanks.

I asked the same question when we were filming. Certainaly, the Quarter horse is bred to be be far more mature physically at 2 than say a TB racehorse that can still look very babyish at the same age. In fact, I was surprised at how mature and strong the 2 year old we filmed in this video actually looked. We also filmed a top international reining horse for another video, who is still going strong at 17-18 years of age. Doug took pains to explain they start them young but bring them on slowly - they don't do their first baby competitions for 2 years after they are started.

Mandeigh 5 Oct 2009 Bred to be start at two?! What about those poor joints?
christina 5 Oct 2009 Really interesting video, I'd love to have a go on a reining horse! How do you work with the horses on the ground & teach them the gaits on the lunge if you don't use voice aids?
